Course Overview

A flock goes off its feed on a Tuesday. By Thursday the mortality sheet has doubled, the farmer is calling, and everyone has a theory. What happens next depends on whoever walks into that house: whether they examine before they guess, open the right birds, send the right samples, and act before the lab report comes back. This course is about being that person.

It starts at the bird. You will work through a systematic clinical examination, a clean postmortem technique and differential diagnosis organised by body system. You will learn how to collect and ship samples a laboratory can actually use, and how to read the results that come back. Then you will go deep on the diseases that cost flocks the most: Newcastle disease, avian influenza (including recognising and reporting it), Gumboro, Marek's, ILT, the major bacterial diseases, coccidiosis and parasites.

From there the course widens to the whole system. You will design biosecurity around real risk pathways and farm zones, audit it on a working farm and plan how to contain an outbreak. You will also cover breeding objectives, indigenous breed improvement and hatchery management, along with precision feed formulation, gut health and mycotoxin control. The later modules turn your farm records into an early-warning system, put antimicrobial stewardship and One Health into daily decisions, and show how to design and monitor poultry training and programmes for the farmers you serve.

There are 31 lessons in 8 modules, about seven hours in total, and you can take them at your own pace. Every lesson ends with a short quiz and an "Apply this" task to carry out on a real farm or programme, so each topic turns into something you have actually done. You earn your certificate when you complete the course.

Key Features

31 expert-level lessons in 8 modules, about seven hours in total, at your own pace
Field-to-lab diagnostics: clinical examination, postmortem technique, differential diagnosis by body system, sampling and reading lab results
In-depth lessons on Newcastle disease, avian influenza, Gumboro, Marek's, ILT, bacterial diseases, coccidiosis and parasites
Biosecurity as a system: risk pathways, farm zoning, the three levels of biosecurity, a scored farm audit and outbreak response
Breeding, genetics and hatchery management, including improving indigenous breeds
Precision nutrition, gut health and feed quality, with mycotoxin control
Data-driven flock management: building KPI systems, reading production trends, setting early-warning indicators, and digital tools and sensors
Antimicrobial stewardship, resistance surveillance and One Health
Programme design for advisers: training farmers, value chains and monitoring poultry outcomes
A quiz and a practical "Apply this" task in every lesson
A certificate when you complete the course

Requirements

  • A working knowledge of poultry production: you should already be comfortable with housing, feeding, brooding and routine vaccination. Commercial Poultry Management is a good preparation
  • Training or experience in animal health, animal science, veterinary practice or poultry extension is strongly recommended
  • Access to a poultry farm, flock or programme where you can carry out the practical tasks
  • For the postmortem and sampling practicals: protective clothing, gloves and the basic equipment your workplace uses, following your local biosafety rules
  • A phone, tablet or computer with internet access

Target Audience

  • Veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals who work with poultry
  • Senior farm technicians, flock supervisors and hatchery staff
  • Livestock and extension officers who advise commercial and smallholder poultry farmers
  • Farm managers of medium to large layer, broiler or breeder operations
  • Programme staff at NGOs, government and development agencies who design, fund or monitor poultry projects
  • Animal health and animal science students preparing for professional practice
