The Agriculture Technician is a permanent position based in Vihiga County, responsible for providing technical support to trainees across crop and livestock production enterprises, including dairy, poultry, and small animal farming. The role covers animal and crop health monitoring, disease prevention, vaccination programs, record keeping, and promoting climate-smart and sustainable farming practices. Candidates must hold a Diploma in Animal Production, Animal Health, Veterinary Technology, Agriculture, or a related field, with at least one year of relevant experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Duties and Responsibilities
Report major repairs required.
Ensuring proper usage, safe custody and inventory of kits, tools and equipment.
Ensure safety and security in the workshops.
Ensure general cleanliness of the work area.
Provide technical support to trainees in crop, dairy, poultry, sheep, goat, pig, and other livestock production enterprises.
Monitor animal and crop health and advise trainees on disease prevention, treatment, and control measures.
Support implementation of vaccination, deworming, and biosecurity programs.
Advise trainees on crop nutrition, preparation of manure, and general crop husbandry practices.
Advice trainees on livestock nutrition, feed formulation, breeding, housing, and general husbandry practices.
Maintain accurate crop and livestock production and health records.
Assist in disease surveillance and reporting of animal health concerns.
Promote animal welfare and adherence to livestock production standards.
Assist farmers in enterprise selection, farm planning, agribusiness development, and value addition activities.
Promote climate-smart agriculture, sustainable farming practices, and environmental conservation initiatives.
Support trainees in the implementation of agricultural projects and programs within the assigned area.
Requirements for Appointment
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
Diploma in Animal Production, Animal Health, Veterinary Technology, Agriculture, Agricultural Extension, or a related field.
Minimum of 1 year relevant experience in crop and livestock production, animal health, and agricultural extension services.
Sound knowledge of crop and livestock management, animal health, and Agricultural Extension methodologies.
Excellent communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
Strong report-writing and data management skills.
Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Salary Scale: Kshs. 25,470 x 1,110 – 26,580 x 1,120 – 27,700 x 1,150 – 28,850 x 1,170 – 30,020 x 1,250 – 31,270 x 1,300 – 32,570 x 1,380 – 33,950 p.m.
House Allowance: As applicable in Vihiga County
